Kris - Congratulations! I love this post - excellent analogy; it should be a favorite. I do visit B&N and I also shop at Amazon.com. Regardless of how the consumer gets the book, the process of reading and digesting the information is still a process. As it pertains to real estate, buying and selling a home is much more than visiting the internet for a inside look at homes.

Kris:

I can see why this article is a favorite with Sellsius--who just named you one of the Top 12 Women Bloggers for 2007.

A thousand balloons for you!

I'm an Amazon Addict and book junkie who loves nothing better than occasional quiet escapes into Barnes & Noble, Borders--and sometimes, a musty old book store. These forays engage elements that Amazon does not: Touch, smell and human engagement.

Kris- your writing never fails to amaze me- my high school journalism teacher would be so proud of you (and then give me a C-, rap my knuckles and put me in time out).

Your point about the tangibility of B&N is well taken. Contrary to many bloggers, I don't purchase books from Amazon; I ALWAYS visit the bookstore. It's the 1% hippie in me, but I even tend to stick to independently owned local bookstores.

It is an EXPERIENCE that I very much enjoy and as an owner of a semi-massive book collection, I must say that regardless of the advent of the Internet, I make 99.99% of my purchases in person. I'm a touchy feely gimme-customer-service type that am highly offended when people don't jump perkily to ask "how can I help you?" Amazon has yet to politely smile at me and show me around a room of coffee smells and people absorbing knowledge- and no .COM ever will, even in Real Estate.

As I'm not the smartest kid in the room, the essence of art, to me anyway, has been to see something and be inspired to remark - "I like that! Very cool." (Sorry Grandpa)

You've managed yet again to pull us in, unaware of our ultimate destination, only to illustrate once more, how a master teaches.

I freely admit to more than a touch of envy.

I gotta start drinking your brand of coffee. :)

hilarious post Kris! my thoughts:

1. Amazon not only has THE inventory but is hands-down the easiest and most effective way to search AND browse for books. Their recommendation engine is top-notch. MLSs can only dream of offering an experience that can be compared to Amazon.

2. I feel like people usually have a good understanding of EXACTLY what they want from a $10 book but are lost when it comes down to deciding exactly what they want from a much more expensive home. That's where an agent comes in.

3. I find the only uses of brick and mortar Barnes and Nobles are the magazine section and, oddly, the cook book section. I leave the rest for Amazon.

> We departed Barnes and Noble like two people who just remembered they left their children on the stove

The essence of art is setting up an expectation and then defeating it. Sheer brilliance.
